About The Event

Contabanned: Empowering Incarcerated Women Through Health Education

Join us for “Contabanned,” a book launch focused on bringing essential women’s health information to incarcerated women. This project, developed by Ilyssa Berger and the team at Patients & Purpose, tackles the challenging issue of book bans in prisons, which often restrict access to vital information on human anatomy.

Our Mission:

In partnership with the Claremont Forum’s Prison Library Project, “Contabanned” aims to bridge the gap in healthcare education for incarcerated women. By launching this vital resource, we strive to provide women in prisons with the knowledge they need to understand and care for their bodies, fostering a healthier and more informed community. Burgers team has tested the limits of book banning by sending this book directly to incarcerated women. Will the book be rejected? How can this information, this contraband, reach the readers who need it?

Why It Matters:

Books that illustrate human anatomy are frequently banned in prisons, leaving many women without access to crucial health information. This lack of education can lead to misinformation and inadequate healthcare for those who need it most. “Contabanned” seeks to challenge these barriers and deliver comprehensive health education to empower incarcerated women.
